'In the Garden of Earthly delights or, if Bosch read the Metro' (2015)
I collected discarded magazines, newspapers and the Metro left on trains for a week and made a flesh monster, a hair monster and an eye monster. These are paintings of the collages I made. I guess the London underground sometimes feels like a netherworld so it seems apt to reference the hellish monsters in Hieronymus Bosch's work 'The Garden of Earthly Delights'.
It's definitely quite shocking to read the Metro or the Evening Standard and to consider just how many people read them on their daily commute to work, more still to consider the vast quantities of paper used in their production and extremely short shelf life. I also write shocking because the proliferation of these two free magazines effectively creates a news monopoly, which is never a good thing since dominant and unchallenged narratives are dangerous.
